BSG S4.5E011: Sometimes a Great Notion

During the hiatus between Seasons 4 and 4.5 several cast members were interviewed saying these last 10 episodes were a wild tough journey. Sometimes a Great Notion is the first of those episodes and if this is a harbinger of things to come, then, yeah, we're in for a tough ride. Hold on.

Simplified maintenance of contributed modules on a Drupal installation

One of the chores which comes with running a Drupal website is keeping the drupal install and contributed modules up to date. Prior to the Available Updates feature (itself a contributed module in Drupal 5 and core drupal in Drupal 6) this was a manual process. You'd occasionally browse the contributed modules list on and hopefully you remember all the installed modules. With the Available Updates feature the system notifies you when your modules are out of date, and it tells you which one. But you still need to do a few things.

Careful use of feedburners chiclet style feed subscribe buttons

For websites which publish RSS/Atom feeds it is helpful to make it easy for users to subscribe to those feeds. There are many feed tracking services and they all offer their own way of subscribing to feeds. The user experience of dealing with an RSS/Atom URL is a little unfriendly and perhaps is beyond the ken of many users.

Rewatching Battlestar Galactica, Season 2

Getting ready for the launch of BG Season 4.5 and am rewatching the prior seasons. I just finished watching season 2.

Some high points are --

It's a very hard hitting series, amazing.

Review: Building a WordPress Blog People Want to Read

Wordpress is one of the more popular platforms for blogging. I obviously prefer to use Drupal but I'm always curious whether the other platforms are any good.

More looks at the Battlestar Galactica season 4.5 webisodes do these take a strange twist. However from the writers commentary the webisodes are not clips cut out of the series but a separate bit of filming done at the very end. In fact the webisodes were being shot WHILE the sets were being torn down and in many cases the webisode filming was the last bit of work done in each set. However it's likely the webisode content is an indicator of the direction which will be taken in season 4.5.

Podango dies, ack! The risk of not owning your own infrastructure

There are many services out there to help you get started with blogging and podcasting. A few clicks and you can have a blogspot account etc, and in the podcasting world there are similar services which offer podcast hosting services. While this is temptingly easy and simple to get started, there are risks. What if, for example, your service provider goes belly up?

Why get into blogging?

Problem with mysql_query quoting of parameter values

I had some code which wasn't working:

mysql_query("UPDATE pracs SET name='{$name}', email='{$email}', webaddr='{$webaddr}', phone='{$phone}', level='{$level}', lineages='{$lineages}', description='{$desc}', password='{$password}' WHERE id={$id}");

In debugging the code I found that the correct values were reaching this statement, but the database wasn't being updated with the new values. Huh?

Well, the official documentation at says

// Formulate Query
// This is the best way to perform a SQL query

Looking back at Battlestar Galactica, Season 1

As I noted earlier I'm rewatching the modern Battlestar Galactica episodes preparing for the coming airing of season 4.5. This is the second half of the fourth season and is due to be the climactic ending of an awesome series. I just finished rewatching the first season and have some thoughts.
