Microbes produce fuels directly from biomass

This is an exciting time when so many breakthroughs are being made which beckon with a bright future of limitless clean energy. There is also this bleak future we're facing where dependency on fossil fuels will doom our society to death and destruction of the wonderful lifestyle we currently enjoy. Somewhere between those two extremes is where our actual future is. If a new biotech company, LS9, has anything to say about it our future is closer to the brightness of limitless clean energy than the darkness of peak-oil-post-apocalyptic doom.

Peak oil denial diagnosed with neoclassical autism | Energy Bulletin

Economists like to suggest that energy is like any other commodity, and that one energy form can be substituted for another. The term is "elasticity". But it shows they are lost in their equations and have no common sense. Obviously oil serves a different function than coal, but they're both "energy". Hence if you convert all forms of energy into BTU's you can equate miles per kilowatt-hour to miles per gallon and pretend they're the same when they're not.

Renewable Energy in Texas - Wind, Solar & Biofuels in Texas - Popular Mechanics

Sweetwater TX may appear to be a down-and-out dying town, but they're going through another wildcat phase. West Texas has a long history of energy company development, being the original location of gusher oil fields. The oil industry is rather dying itself but Texas is now focusing on wind power. If Texas were a country—and Texans love to remind you that it once was a sovereign republic—it would rank seventh in carbon-dioxide emissions: Its economy accounts for more than a quarter of total U.S.

TechnoSanity #33: A look at the World Energy Outlook, 2009

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released their yearly World Energy Outlook report for 2009. This report is used by governments and corporations worldwide for planning energy policies and purchases. This years report is very sobering on several levels.

The primary purpose of the report is to show the state of the oil, natural gas and coal industries and give recommendations. This years report makes it clear that peak oil is a reality and that drastic steps are required to counter-act the greenhouse gas climate change situation.

Carbon Nanotube Membrane Elements for Energy Efficient and Low Cost Reverse Osmosis

NanOasis Technologies has received $2 million in DOE funding in the ARPA-E program to develop "Carbon nanotubes for reverse osmosis membranes that require less energy and have many times higher flux. Could dramatically reduce the cost and energy required for desalination to supply fresh water for our crops and communities." Water supplies in most of the world are threatened and finding supplies of fresh clean water is a critical worldwide need.
