Toxins found in "cord blood" of newborn babies

Testing of blood taken from umbilical cords of newborn babies are showing the presence of many toxic chemicals.

However, as noted in the article, this isn't new. The ecologist Sandra Steingraber had dug up tons of research on this in her book Having Faith about her pregnancy. As an ecologist she decided to study her pregnancy and the womb as an ecosystem.

What's the point of TV Turnoff Week?

Okay, did Luann here get the idea? At tvturnoff.org they're suggesting we can "take control of technology" so that technology doesn't control us. They suggest doing this by excising TV from our life for a week.

Training them young

I grew up watching television, just like all the kids around me. It was the 60's, and the shift from black and white to color television was just beginning. Yes, there were color televisions available, but they were more expensive so we didn't get one until pretty late in the 60's. And, yes, the installation of the color TV involved a lot of guys fiddling with technology and it might have coincided with the Super Bowl.

Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation

"Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation" -- hmm, at least that's what today's fortune cookie says. This connected with me and I want to write a little of how I take this statement.

The key is to consider what "discontent" really means. And not only what you mean, but what does one do when they're discontented?

What does "Love" mean?

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?" The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore.

So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love."

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.

You just know that your name is safe in their mouth."

Billy - age 4

Skipping ChristmasI first read this book a few years ago when I, myself, was skipping Christmas. I've never read any of Grisham's novels, and am not one of his devotees.

About Cracker Barrel Restaurents

My fiancee loves the Cracker Barrel restaurants. Last week we went to Kentucky to introduce each other to our respective families and friends. Since Kentucky is rife with the Cracker Barrel places, we ate there a couple times. We also ate at one in Albuquerque NM last year.

The food is pretty good and well done. What I find "interesting" is the atmosphere and some of the details.
