A strange Drupal error while running update.php: Call to undefined function: phptemplate_get_ie_styles()

I've upgraded and updated my Drupal installs a zillion times. A strange error has occurred on the last couple of them which has me scratching my head. I want to share some observations in the hope it will help some others..

Upon applying the updates and running update.php I get this error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function: phptemplate_get_ie_styles() in .../themes/garland/maintenance-page.tpl.php on line 23

Drupal disaster recovery with the Backup and Migrate module

I recently had a small disaster on this site -- the database which contains the Drupal config and data for this site, well, it went insane. Certain things were blowing up either with screwed up display or what's known as the "white screen of death". And I could not get them corrected. This is one of the downsides of Drupal is when things go wrong it's often nigh on impossible to diagnose the problem or repair it.

Text Size module for Drupal

The Text Size project provides a neat handy little gizmo to let people change the text size on your site. Have users who need a little help seeing text? This is the thing to let users set their preferred size.

It offers a block you position anywhere blocks go. The block has gizmos letting people set their preferred text size. That's about it.

The ZigBee Smart Energy system

One key to reducing energy use is to aid people in better managing their energy use. For example the "phantom load" problem accounts for many megawatts of electricity which essentially does nothing. The phantom load problem is an example where people are unable to see the energy usage patterns and don't understand that leaving a widget plugged and turned off still causes an energy drain. Further it may not be clear to them the power used by their computer, their refrigerator, their dishwasher, etc.

BSG S4.5E019: Daybreak pt. 1

I apologize to both of my readers for missing blogging about the previous episode. It was such a yawner though I couldn't get motivated to write anything. This episode, well, let's just say the last few episodes have not lived up to the quick pace of the earlier ones. It seemed they had a big amount of story to jam into a few episodes, but this episode and the couple preceding ones are not following the pattern. In any case there are some items of interest so let's get started.

BSG S4.5E017: Someone to take care of me

So.. just who is this piano player anyway. He appears in Starbuck's vision but isn't there when Tigh confronts Starbuck about where she learned the F'ing song. It appears likely the piano player is Daniel, and that Daniel was her father. It was nice seeing her as a little girl and there have been glimpses before that she knows a thing or two about arts such as poetry and now music. Very different from her current persona as a hard drinking steely eyed fighter jock.

BSG S4.5E016: Deadlock

Returning to the traditional BSG opening from the abnormal opening in the last episode, we have a slower episode but still critical in finishing off the story. Obviously from last episode Ellen Tigh would return to the Fleet, and that the situation was set up for a strange confrontation between Caprica, Ellen and Saul. And sure enough that's what happened.

BSG S4.5E015: No Exit

No Exit is a departure from prior stories as signified by the different intro sequence. Instead of the rundown of the Cylons come in many models and they have a plan, this intro replays and re-frames, a bit, the Cylon war. The occasion? Samuel T. Anders remembers the truth, he remembers the role the Five played in creating the "skin jobs" and in causing the cease-fire in the Cylon war. Wow is this becoming a very interesting story.

BSG S4.5E014: Blood on the Scales

Finishing off the coup with a bang. The episode picks up where the previous one left off, seeing the aftermath of the grenade thrown at Adama and Tigh. They survived. Maybe the grenade was more bang than boom? In any case this put Adama and Tigh in custody, and lead to a hilarious-to-watch series of confrontations between Adama and Gaeta. Gaeta is of course intent to take back his ship and every step of the way he's forcing responsibility and scorn in Gaeta's direction.
